PSG extension talks with Neymar advancing, discussions with Juan Bernat proving difficult

RMC Sport report that PSG’s main focus in the coming months will be to obtain the contract extensions of Neymar and Kylian Mbappé.

As it relates to the Brazilian, Les Parisiens are experiencing “slow [but] advances.”

On the other hand, they are not having productive conversations with Spanish left-back Juan Bernat, who they want to retain and who has just 12 months remaining on his existing deal. The 27-year-old currently has salary demands that Les Parisiens do not intend to meet, but the Ligue 1 club remains hopeful but conversations resulting in a positive conclusion.

The two individuals have disagreed on a number of issues in recent weeks, including the departure of Thiago Silva, with the German coach having wanted to retain the former club captain, whilst the Brazilian did nothing. Leonardo has also been at odds with Tuchel with the German offering his players what the Brazilian has believed to have been too many days off.

The major outstanding issue however stands over Leonardo’s desire to sign a number six this summer, whilst Tuchel does not believe it to be necessary. The German wants to keep faith in Ander Herrera and Leandro Paredes.

Leeds United attempting to sign Julian Draxler from PSG

RMC Sport report that Premier League side Leeds United have begun an audacious attempt to sign German international attacker Julian Draxler.

The 26-year-old has not responded positively to Marcelo Bielsa’s side’s initial approach as of now. With 12 months remaining on his current PSG contract, Draxler has no intention of leaving his Parisian lifestyle early & has rejected a number of Bundesliga approaches too.

But, Sporting Director Leonardo is desperate to get him out of the door. More to follow in the coming days.

Rennes & Strasbourg in formal negotiations for Mohamed Simakan

Rennes President Nicolas Holveck today formally opened negotiations with Ligue 1 counterparts Strasbourg over the possible signing of 20-year-old right-sided defender Mohamed Simakan, according to RMC Sport.

RCSA have set out their stall with a €20m asking price, but SRFC intend to get Thierry Laurey’s side to reduce their demands, possibly through offering a considerable amount fo money upfront and less in instalments.

The player, who is in negotiations with Atalanta over a provisional 5-year contract, also has interest from AC Milan and Lyon.

But Rennes are the only side in direct negotiations with Strasbourg at the moment. OL do not intend to move for Simakan unless they lose either Joachim Andersen or Jason Denayer before the window closes.

Luis Henrique will arrive in France on Thursday to join Marseille for €12m

RMC Sport and L’Équipe report that 18-year-old wideman Luis Henrique is currently en route to France via plane and will arrive at Marseille on Thursday ahead of a €12m transfer.

Henrique will sign a 5-year contract with André Villas-Boas’ club should he pass the usual medical checks. After a series of protracted negotiations, Botafogo, who own 40% of the player’s rights and Três Passos, the club that he spent his youth career at and who owned the other 60% of the teenager’s rights, found an agreement with OM for a total of €12m.

Botafogo representative Carlos Montenegro had the following to say on the deal: “Yes, we are happy. That is what he is worth. I hope that he will be the exciting prospect. I will be his biggest fan!”

Henrique is travelling to France with one of his agents, Cristiano Manica. Henrique has made just 21 professional appearances.

PSG won’t sign Marcelo Brozovic – Le Parisien

Le Parisien report that barring an improbable u-turn between now and Monday night, Ligue 1 side PSG will not be signing Croatian midfielder Marcelo Brozovic from inter Milan.

The same goes for defender Milan Skriniar, although PSG weren’t even considering that such a deal could be possible before the end of the window, as they can only offer loan with option to buy packages.

For Brozovic, it appears that Inter Milan would open to offloading, but it would have to be done on a permanent basis.

He was asked directly about Memphis Depay being left on the bench.

“I chose (my XI) in terms of the form of the players and in terms of what could still happen tomorrow. I can have faith in those who are sure of being here, and that is the case for Houssem Aouar for example. I am happy to be able to count on him.”

Mediapro asking for 25% haircut on 2019/20 rights payments

The battle between the LFP and its domestic rights broadcaster, Mediapro, continues, with the latter organisation still refusing to make a payment due in October.

Owing to Mediapro’s parent company, Joye Media SL, being in financial difficulty, Jaume Roures is asking for a 25% haircut on the price for the 2020/21 campaign. Mediapro signed a contract that committed them to spending €820m a year on French football, and this discount would diminish their fees by somewhere between €170m and €200m, but uniquely for this season, according to L’Équipe.

In order to ensure financial survival of clubs in the meantime, the LFP were forced to take out a €120m bank loan last month, and will likely be forced to take another loan to support clubs in the coming weeks if their disagreements with Mediapro are not resolved.

The LFP is in a difficult situation, because if it accepts giving Mediapro a discount, the other more minor rights holders will surely also insist on receiving the same haircut: Free, Canal + and BeIN Sports, who currently make up around €300m a year of the overall domestic broadcasting landscape.

Reims owner Caillot warns that half of Ligue 1 clubs could go bankrupt

Speaking to Le Parisien, Stade de Reims President Jean-Pierre Caillot warned that the financial difficulties facing French football could result in bankruptcy for a number of clubs before the end of the 2020/21 season.

This economic crisis has been caused by the inability to get fans into stadiums owing to the pandemic, but also by the fact that domestic TV rights broadcaster Mediapro is currently refusing to make its monthly payments to teams, demanding a COVID-19 discount on their portion of the €1.172bn a year broadcast deal.

“It is not taboo to say it. Today, TV rights are part of our economic base and from the moment that Mediapro, the principal broadcaster, doesn’t pay us anymore… The LFP and its president Vincent Labrune and working to find solutions which is not simple. But when you don’t have any TV rights money, ticketing money, hospitality money, you’ll have to explain to me how we are supposed to keep our business running. So yes, very clearly, more than half of the Ligue 1 clubs could end up in a position of not being able to pay their people.”

“If the league cannot get a new loan, which is far from assured at this point, I think that in February or March, there will be a lot of clubs who will not be able to pay their players and employees. Because we often forget that a football club is not just 11 players.”
