Vettel says confidence ‘getting a lot better’ despite Q2 exit

There was no sugar-coating Sebastian Vettel’s performance in qualifying for the Emilia Romagna GP, but the Aston Martin driver nevertheless insisted his confidence “is getting a lot better”.

Like in Bahrain, Vettel failed to follow teammate Lance Stroll into the top-ten shootout, the German driver outpaced again by the latter and concluding qualifying P13. The four-time world champion only blamed himself for the shortfall.

“I lost one tenth in the straight because I was quite alone in the end,” he said. “But I lost also a little bit to myself, so maybe it was not the best lap, which obviously you need to make it to Q3.”

Vettel’s integration with his new team has perhaps been more straightforward than his adaptation to his new car. But despite Saturday’s under-performance, the 53-time Grand Prix winner in search of a resurgence says his confidence level is improving.

“It’s coming,” he said after qualifying. “Obviously, I’m not a very patient guy, so I don’t want to wait, but it is getting a lot better.

“On a track like this in particular you need the ultimate confidence to extract everything and I’m not yet there, but it’s only the second race. So I guess I have to be a bit more patient.”

“The car is quite different to what I was used to in the past.

“There are a couple of things that nowadays, with tyres and how you set up the cars et cetera, can make quite a big difference. So that’s why I think it’s taking me a bit longer than normal.

“Obviously, in all fairness, as well if it’s for the ultimate tenths that you’re fighting in the midfield then you see the consequence straight away as well.”

I’ve known we had a special connection since we first met (well FIRST I liked the way his butt looked in his jeans and the way he made me laugh and the fact that his backpack was monogrammed which seemed VERY adult to me five years ago) and I quickly learned that he is the kindest, funniest, most incredible man I’ve ever met. I’m so proud to be his girl and will be even prouder to be his wife. Let’s do this baby @andybovine

DJ Bien-Aime’s Mock Draft 2.0: Jets take Teven Jenkins at No. 23 to help protect a rookie QB

After the first two picks in the first round of the NFL Draft on April 29, everything else will be a free for all.

Here I try to predict a chaotic Round 1 — with five quarterbacks going in the Top 10 — as we prep for the real thing on Thursday.

1. Jacksonville Jaguars: Trevor Lawrence, QB, Clemson

If Lawrence isn’t the pick, the NFL world will be set on fire.

2. Jets: Zach Wilson, QB, BYU

From Utah to New York, let’s roll Zachary.

3. San Francisco 49ers (via Dolphins): Mac Jones, QB, Alabama

I wouldn’t do this but all reports say Mac is the pick. Selecting Jones over Fields is a head scratcher. Maybe Kyle Shanahan isn’t the genius NFL media has touted him out to be.

4. Atlanta Falcons: Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State

With reports of the Falcons taking calls on Julio Jones, it seems a rebuild is imminent. Get the QB of the future in Justin Fields.

5. Cincinnati Bengals: Penei Sewell, OT, Oregon

Joe Burrow wants former LSU teammate Ja’Marr Chase, but Sewell will prevent Burrow from being on the IR, which is more important than playing with a former teammate.

6. Miami Dolphins (via Eagles): Kyle Pitts, TE, Florida

Pitts is a man bear (half man, half bear) and is arguably the best overall prospect in the draft. He is a can’t miss and has future All-Pro written all over him. This gives Tua Tagovailoa a new weapon and a completely revamped receiving core of Devante Parker, Will Fuller, Pitts and Gesicki.

7. Detroit Lions: Ja’Marr Chase, WR, LSU

QB Jared Goff gets a new weapon in the best receiver prospect in years. Chase and Goff should make magic in Detroit.

8. Carolina Panthers: Rashawn Slater, OT, Northwestern

The Panthers get Sam Darnold some more protection so he can sling it to his new weapons in DJ Moore, Robby Anderson and Christian McCaffrey.

9. Denver Broncos: Trey Lance, QB, North Dakota State

Move over Drew Lock, Lance is the future for the Broncos. His upside is too much to pass up in a division that features Justin Herbert, Derek Carr and Patrick Mahomes for the hope that Lock becomes great.

10. Dallas Cowboys: Patrick Surtain II, CB, Alabama

Some scouts view Surtain as the cleanest cornerback in the draft. The Cowboys get a stud to help their defense, which was bad last year.

11. Giants: DeVonta Smith, WR, Alabama

The Giants land the 2020 Heisman winner who has zero holes in his game. His route running is elite, he’s got strong hands and can fly. Only questions revolve around his size at 6-0, 170 pounds.

12. Philadelphia Eagles (via Dolphins): Jaylen Waddle, WR, Alabama

Waddle is arguably the fastest receiver in the draft and some believe he has more upside than his teammate Smith due to his blazing speed. Jalen Hurts gets a dynamic weapon to help his development.

13. L.A. Chargers: Christian Darrisaw, OT, Virginia Tech

Adding Darrisaw will improve a unit that was one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL in 2020. With the additions of Corey Linsley and Darrisaw, Justin Herbert should be even better.

14. Minnesota Vikings: Alijah Vera-Tucker, OT/G, USC

The former USC tackle is versatile and can play both tackle and guard. He would be an instant upgrade at left guard over Mason Cole.

15. New England Patriots: Kadarius Toney, WR, Florida.

Toney is electric with the ball in his hands and will be a great weapon for Cam Newton to throw to.

16. Arizona Cardinals: Jaycee Horn, CB, South Carolina

When the Cardinals released Patrick Peterson in the offseason, it made them deficient at cornerback. Their returning corners are Byron Murphy, Malcolm Butler and Robert Alford. Horn immediately improves that group.

17. Las Vegas Raiders: Micah Parsons, LB, Penn State

Some view Parsons as the best defensive player in the draft and he will help improve a Raiders defense that was putrid last year.

18. Miami Dolphins: Azeez Ojulari, OLB, Georgia

After releasing Kyle Van Noy the Dolphins will be able to fill his spot with Ojulari.

19. Washington Football Team: Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, LB, Notre Dame

Owusu-Koramoah adds to an already loaded defense.

Click Here: parramatta eels rugby store

20. Chicago Bears: Rashod Bateman, WR, Minnesota

The Bears need to provide Andy Dalton with as many weapons as possible.

21. Indianapolis Colts: Zaven Collins, LB, Tulsa

Collins could be the best defensive player in the draft. He’s a playmaker that has great instincts and should be a difference maker in the NFL.

22. Tennessee Titans: Greg Newsome, CB, Northwestern

The Titans released both of their starting cornerbacks from 2020. Newsome has everything you want in a corner and can contribute right away.

23. Jets: Teven Jenkins, OT, Oklahoma State

The Jets draft should focus around Wilson. Drafting Jenkins protects Wilson. He is a mauler and will improve the offensive line.

24. Pittsburgh Steelers: Najee Harris, RB, Alabama

Harris has zero holes in his game. His vision, quickness, power and hands are elite. He adds a much needed boost to the Steelers run game that lost James Conner in free agency.

25. Jacksonville Jaguars: Christian Barmore, DT, Alabama

The Jags’ defense was bad against the run in 2020. The selection of Barmore will improve that flaw in their defense.

26. Cleveland Browns: Jamin Davis, LB, Kentucky

Davis is an excellent athlete that can improve the Browns linebacker unit.

27. Baltimore Ravens: Terrace Marshall Jr., WR, LSU

The Ravens receiving core needs improvement. Lamar Jackson doesn’t have enough weapons outside of Mark Andrews and Marquise Brown. Marshall will improve the passing game and allow Jackson to take another step in his development.

28. New Orleans Saints: Kwity Paye, DE, Michigan

Paye will help replace Trey Hendrickson who had 13.5 sacks last year but left in free agency.

29. Green Bay Packers:  Landon Dickerson, C, Alabama

The Packers fill a need with Dickerson after losing their pro bowl center during the offseason.

30. Buffalo Bills: Jaelan Phillips, DE, Miami

If the Bills want to surpass Kansas City they need to improve their pass rush, which was 15th in the league with 38 sacks. Phillips is an excellent option even though he has had some medical concerns.

31. Baltimore Ravens: Liam Eichenberg, OT, Notre Dame

After trading Orlando Brown, the Ravens can fill his role with Eichenberg.

32. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Gregory Rousseau, DE, Miami

The Buccaneers’ pass rush harassed Mahomes in the Super Bowl and is the main reason they won. Adding more firepower never hurts.

Slashing Methane Emissions Must Play Larger Role in Fighting Climate Crisis, UN Says

The United Nations will release a report next month on methane, calling for a reduction in emissions of the main component of natural gas to play a greater role in fighting the climate crisis—a step that could result in relatively rapid benefits for public health and the climate, according to scientists.

The report, which will be released by U.N.’s Climate and Clean Air Coalition and the U.N. Environment Program in the coming weeks, follows a pledge by U.S. President Joe Biden to reduce the country’s carbon emissions by 50 to 52% below 2005 levels.

“If we can make a big enough cut in methane in the next decade, we’ll see public health benefits within the decade, and climate benefits within two decades.”
—Dr. Drew Shindell, Duke University

As Common Dreams reported earlier this month, a study released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) showed that both carbon and methane emissions rose in 2020 to levels unseen on the planet in more than three million years—despite the slowing of economic activity due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Recent studies suggest that the amount of methane released each year from oil and gas production, mainly from leaks in infrastructure, have been underestimated in the past while releases from cattle ranching and other sources may have been overstated.

Methane emissions could plummet by 45% by 2030 with a concerted effort to reduce the gas by the fossil fuel, agricultural, and waste sectors, according to the New York Times, which obtained a detailed summary of the U.N. report. That reduction would help keep the planet from warming by nearly 0.3°C by the 2040s.

As it stands, methane emissions are projected to rise through at least 2040, according to the U.N., and the report states that expanding the use of natural gas—which proponents have claimed is a cleaner and safer alternative to oil and coal—is not compatible with keeping the heating of the planet at or below 1.5°C.

Author and 350.org co-founder Bill McKibben called the upcoming report a “crucial study” for its clear-cut message about natural gas.

The fossil fuel industry is in the unique position of being able to quickly effect change, according to the U.N. Because methane lasts in the atmosphere for only about a decade after its release—unlike carbon, which lasts for hundreds of years—cutting methane emissions now could help to meet midcentury targets for fighting the planetary emergency.

“It’s going to be next to impossible to remove enough carbon dioxide to get any real benefits for the climate in the first half of the century,” Drew Shindell, the study’s lead author and a professor at Duke University, told the Times. “But if we can make a big enough cut in methane in the next decade, we’ll see public health benefits within the decade, and climate benefits within two decades.”

While much of the focus in discussions about halting the climate crisis has revolved around carbon, methane warms the atmosphere more than 80 times as much as carbon does over a 20-year period.

The U.N. reports that slashing methane emissions from the fossil fuel sector could prevent more than 250,000 premature deaths and more than 750,000 hospitalizations each year starting in 2030. Methane is also responsible for the loss of more than 25 million crops per year, the Times reported.

The report comes days after U.S. Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), a co-author of the Green New Deal, called on Biden to include specific language regarding methane in the country’s nationally determined contribution (NDC), or its commitment to greenhouse gas reduction under the Paris climate agreement.

“Momentum is building for international action to curb dangerous methane pollution and mitigate the immediate threat of accelerated global warming,” Markey wrote. “The United States has an opportunity to cement its position as a global leader through robust methane reduction targets and strategies.”

The U.S. Senate is expected to vote this week on reversing former President Donald Trump’s regulatory rollback regarding methane emissions.

'Stop Fossil Fuel Madness': Gulf Coast Advocates Tell Biden to End US Oil and Gas Exports

A group of community leaders from the Gulf Coast backed by a diverse coalition kicked off a new campaign this week demanding President Joe Biden stop fossil fuel exports to help put the brakes on the climate crisis and “build an economy that works for people, not polluters.”

“Fossil exports shifts the burden to those least able to transition, reduces domestic resources, and increases our dependence, while further endangering coastal communities,” said John Beard, founder and CEO of the Port Arthur Community Action Network.

“We must stop the fossil fuel madness,” he added.

One of the first acts of the Stop Fossil Fuel Exports campaign—part of a “Defend the Gulf” week of action which began Monday—was to deliver a letter calling on Biden to declare a national climate emergency and reinstate the ban on crude oil exports. The letter was signed by hundreds of organizations including Sierra Club, Another Gulf Is Possible, and Global Witness.

The 2015 lifting of that ban, along with fracking boom, is to blame for the rise in oil and gas exports, the groups say.

The letter also calls on the Biden administration to stop gas exports to “the fullest extent possible” and reject any permits for fossil fuel infrastructure.

Beyond oil and gas, the letter notes that the “U.S. is a net exporter of coal, one of the dirtiest fossil fuels.” In addition to stopping coal exports, the groups further urge the administration to stop “overseas finance for fossil fuel exports and infrastructure.”

“The United States must be a global leader in advancing climate, racial, and economic justice, end the era of fossil fuel exports, and build back fossil free, delivering jobs, justice, and opportunity for all,” the letter says.

The launch of the campaign comes as Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) are set to reintroduce their Green New Deal resolution in Congress on Tuesday and ahead of an international summit on climate hosted by President Biden, which begins Thursday.

The new campaign’s website makes a four-part case for stopping fossil fuel exports.

First off, the fossil fuels worsen the climate emergency, and the “U.S. can’t be a climate leader if it’s also the world’s largest fossil fuel dealer,” the campaign says.

The exports are also “bad for jobs,” the campaign argues, because while Big Oil is enjoying profits, the companies are cutting jobs and lobbying against a clean energy transition.

Fossil fuel exports worsen U.S. security as well, the campaign argues. “We need to build an energy system that keeps the lights on when climate disasters strike,” the campaign says alongside a photo of icicles hanging from a ceiling fan in Texas in February amid widespread power outages after Winter Storm Uri struck.

Further driving the campaign are the adverse impacts on frontline communities of fossil fuel export infrastructure and operations, which local organizers say “pollute our air, poison our drinking water, and put our families at risk,” organizers say.

Such impacts are well known to people like Diane Wilson, a fourth-generation shrimper and environmental activist. Two weeks ago, she began a hunger strike at the waterfront of Lavaca Bay, Texas to protest an oil export dredging project in the mercury-contaminated Matagorda Ship Channel.

“I am risking my life to stop the reckless destruction of my community,” Wilson said in a statement. “Oil and gas export terminals like the project I am fighting pollute our air, water, and climate—only to pad the pockets of fossil fuel CEOs.”

“The Biden administration needs to stop the dredging and stop oil and gas exports,” said Wilson.

Another Gulf resident and advocate calling for Biden to enact the bans is Melanie Oldham of Citizens for Clean Air and Clean Water in Freeport, Texas—a community she notes is facing two oil export projects, the Sea Port Oil Terminal and Texas GulfLink.

In a statement, Oldham called attention to what she said was “a dramatic disconnect between President Biden’s climate and environmental justice ambitions, and the reality of our oil and gas exports market run amok.”

“To protect our communities and make good on his promises, Biden needs to end fossil fuel exports now,” she said.

Williams gunning for 100 pit stops in Captain Tom 100 Challenge

Williams will attempt to complete 100 pit stops over the course of the three-day Portuguese Grand Prix weekend as it takes part in the Captain Tom Moore 100 Challenge.

Captain Tom, who passed away earlier this year at 100, became an inspiration and a true hero for Britain last year when he raised an astonishing £38 million for NHS charities by walking 100 laps around his garden during the country’s COVID lockdown period.

To mark what would have been Captain Tom’s 101st birthday on April 30, the Captain Tom Foundation has invited people to take on a challenge of their choice based around the number 100, and to raise money for a charity of their choosing.

Williams Racing will therefore aim to complete 100 pitstops during the three-day Portuguese Grand Prix weekend, with both its trackside team in Portimão and staff at the factory in Grove contributing to the effort.

Williams’ fundraising endeavor associated with the inspiring challenge will benefit the team’s Official Charity, Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) which provides information, advice and support to the 50,000 people living with spinal cord injury in the UK.

“Captain Sir Tom Moore inspired millions around the world, with his simple message of hope, ‘Tomorrow will be a good day’ and brought comfort and joy to so many around the world during the pandemic,” said Williams boss Jost Capito.

“It has been a challenging time for everyone and still is, and we want to take this opportunity to do something in his memory, whilst also raising money for a very worthy cause.

“As a team, we take great pride in our pitstops, so this is a great challenge for the team both trackside and at the factory to come together to accomplish, and we’re looking forward to it.”

Hopefully, only a handful of Williams’ 100 pitstops will take place in the Portuguese Grand Prix itself!

the past 2 years have brought me more physical and spiritual transition and evolution than ever before my body left me with no choice but to listen and be still within that stillness i begin my journey in confronting my worst enemy, fear. ive lived my best and worst moments in front of the lens and gaze of the world since i was a teenager. ive always tried to live in my truth no matter how ugly or full of love it is. ive also tried to carve out the space to protect my heart, and my life as it unfolds, evolves, and changes. 11 years ago i met a phenomenal man who changed every existence of my life. early this year we separated and parted ways, (and tho it ain’t nan no body business ) i find it necessary to protect the sacredness of my personal truth and to live in it fully just as I have before and will continue to do. it is unfair to not have power of your own story as you shape and mold and rewrite it yourself. a nigga ain’t perfect, but im leaning into the fear of the unknown and all the glory and power i know exist within god and the universes grace. may all of your transitions no matter how big or small, be kind to you and filled with incredible love and light!
