'World's best' youngster Milinkovic-Savic worth more than Pogba, says Lazio president

Lazio have received no offers for their Serbian sensation since 2017, despite constant links to Manchester United and AC Milan

Lazio president Claudio Lotito claimed midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is worth more than Manchester United’s Paul Pogba, stating the Serbian is “much stronger”.

Milinkovic-Savic has been the subject of persistent rumours linking him with a move away from Lazio, where he has been one of the club’s top performers since arriving from Genk in August 2015.

The 23-year-old is reportedly being tracked by Lazio’s Serie A rivals Juventus and AC Milan as well as Real Madrid and Manchester United, but Lotito said no offers for the player have been made since 2017.

“Sergej is the best young player on the world scene, with huge potential,” Lotito told Corriere della Sera .

“I have not received any official offers either from Milan or Juventus, let alone from Real or United.

“Of course, I do not push to sell him but if you ask me how much he is worth then I remember that last year, August 29, I refused a €110 million offer.”

Milinkovic-Savic scored 12 goals in 35 Serie A appearances as Lazio finished fifth in 2017-18, before playing in all three of Serbia’s games at the World Cup.

Lotito indicated that he may be willing to part with the playmaker should an offer in excess of the €105 million that Manchester United paid for Pogba were to arrive.

“How much has Pogba been sold to Manchester? €105 million?” said Lotito. “So Milinkovic is worth more, because he is much stronger.

“And be clear, I’m not interested in technical counterparts or loan-type formulas.”

Lotito has already said that Lazio will only listen to “indecent offers” for their star , while Milinkovic-Savic himself has already claimed he is staying at Lazio .

AC Milan director Leonardo, meanwhile,  says his side have withdrawn their interest because of the asking price.

'I love my life here' – Rodgers dismisses speculation he could quit Celtic

The Northern Irishman has been publicly critical of the board at Celtic Park in recent weeks but still wants to bring in new players

Brendan Rodgers has rubbished speculation that he could walk away from Celtic over dissatisfaction with the club’s spending during the transfer window.

The Scottish champions suffered a surprise 1-0 loss in their second game of the Scottish Premier League season to Hearts, thanks to Kyle Lafferty’s goal, as they look to secure a third consecutive domestic treble.

Rodgers has overseen a glorious period in the club’s history, with Saturday’s loss only his 17th in all competitions since taking the reins in 2016, but he has reportedly struggled with the board at Celtic Park over their inability to add players during the off-season.

However, the Northern Irishman has downplayed speculation that he could quit in protest over inaction in the transfer market and is still looking to improve his squad as they pursue an eighth league title in a row.

“I love my life here,” Rodgers told his post-match press conference. “Despite all reports, I don’t work that way.

“I’d read somewhere else about walking away. I’ve got three years left on my contract here. My communication is very open, so that’s certainly not the case.”

Addressing his previous gripes about transfer spending that he voiced before a 1-1 draw with AEK Athens midweek in the Champions League third qualifying round, he added: “Of course, we want quality players but there’s still improvement in this squad and this team.

“All I want is for us to improve every aspect of the club.”

Defender Dedryck Boyata missed the defeat to Hearts and has been linked with a move away from the club to either Italy or Spain, but Rodgers remains hopeful that the Belgian will remain at Celtic.

Addressing Boyata’s future, he added: “He is such a good player, and we don’t want to lose him at this stage.

“He has been in discussions with the club for a period of time. Talks were put off in the summer because Dedryck was going to the World Cup and he wanted to see how it would go.

“He is a fantastic player and a guy who we want to keep.”

Salah and Kane, watch out! Arsenal whirlwind Aubameyang is coming for you

The Gabon striker scored 10 goals in 13 Premier League matches after joining in January and will look to stamp his mark in England this season

While many fans will be licking their lips at watching the likes of Mohamed Salah and Harry Kane lead the line for their respective teams this season, there is one Gabonese striker whose goal-poaching qualities shouldn’t be underestimated going into the new Premier League campaign.

Arsenal’s pursuit of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang took up most of the January transfer window, with head of recruitment Sven Mislintat taking the Gunners’ delegation to Dortmund, where he led negotiations with the club he had departed only two months previously.

The £55.5m ($71m) deal saw Arsenal break a club record which had only been set a few months earlier when Alexandre Lacazette joined from Lyon – and it’s a transfer which could be seen as the most important as new boss Unai Emery looks to improve on last season’s sixth-placed finish achieved under his predecessor Arsene Wenger.

Aubameyang became the first Arsenal player to score five goals in his first six Premier League matches for the Gunners, putting his name in history above the likes of Thierry Henry and Robin van Persie.

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown told the Daily Star: “Aubameyang is going to be a player that I think could really tear up the Premier League this season so we’ll have to wait and see how that happens.”

The former Dortmund duo of Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan represent exciting attacking options for Arsenal. Both players possess vast experience in elite European leagues and have the ability to utilise their individual talent in ways to exploit opposition defences. Aubameyang’s pace, and tendency to get in behind defenders, makes him a unique proposition while Mkhitaryan’s clever running and astute passing radar ensure that chances will always be created in the final third.

Aubameyang’s impressive pre-season form suggests that he will be Arsenal’s shining light in attack going into the new season. His partnership with Lacazette blossomed in the final few games of the last campaign and what was once a rivalry during their time in France now presents the opportunity to fire Arsenal up the league table.

“He is a different player, he loves the space and I’m a player who loves to get the ball to my feet,” said Lacazette. “Auba is a nice guy. I think we can be good together.”

Those comments were echoed by Aubameyang, who has no qualms over playing alongside what many would believe is a direct competitor for his position in the Arsenal team.

”We have different styles, but I think they’re styles that complement each other – he’s a very good player and a very kind person,” he said. “We were once rivals in our days in France, but we’re now friends and I hope we can play well together and score lots of goals.”

Friendships between team-mates can be a key facet when it comes to improving team morale and Goal understands that Emery’s high-intensity training sessions have been welcomed by the Arsenal squad this summer.

Aubameyang’s 10 goals in 14 games in all competitions, despite only joining in January, should remind everyone that he hasn’t even got started yet.

The only question that remains is where he will be deployed in the Arsenal frontline. Whether it’s on the left with Lacazette through the middle, or both players starting alongside each other as central striking options, there can be no doubt that, with the likes of Mesut Ozil, Mkhitaryan, Lacazette and Aubameyang in the team, Arsenal are spoilt for choice in attack.

Salah won the Golden Boot last season while Kane won it two years before him, but Aubameyang will feel that, if he continues how he left off from last campaign, then he has a genuine chance to become the Premier League’s main man.

Zinedine Zidane insists there has been ‘no discussions’ about Gareth Bale leaving Real Madrid in January amid China links

The 30-year-old has been granted permission to miss the trip to Leganes on Wednesday night to travel to England to deal with a personal matter.

Having seen a summer move fail to materialise, speculation is still rife about the future of Bale at the club, and he has also been linked with a move to China in recent days.

Zidane, though, maintains there are no underlying issues with the forward, who has also struggled with fitness issues since returning from international duty.

“He went to London on a personal matter and with the permission of the club. He talked to the club because he has a right to personal things,” the Real Madrid coach said.

“You have to ask the club for permission, which is the most important thing. He also went because he’s not available.

Who is Caoimhin Kelleher? The Liverpool goalkeeper set to start Carabao Cup tie against Arsenal

Kelleher, who played in the Reds’ 2-0 victory over MK Dons in the last round, steps in for No.1 choice Alisson Becker.

It’s a big decision by Jurgen Klopp and his coaching staff given Liverpool are playing Arsenal at Anfield.

Ahead of the game, Klopp’s assistant Pepijn Lijnders said: “For me consistency is the most important thing if you want to give players an opportunity.

“We have Ali as our number one, more than a number one, and Adrian did an unbelievable job for us. Caiomhin started this competition and he will start tomorrow.

“For his age as a goalkeeper, he is very stable. That’s what we like about him. We see a good future for him and want to give him his opportunity and you need these opportunities to grow.”

Kelleher, a 20-year-old from Cork, joined Liverpool from Ireland’s Ringmahon Rangers in 2015 and has since progressed from the academy to the first-team fold.

He has featured regularly for the Reds’ youth sides in recent years and made 11 Premier League 2 appearances for the Under-23s last season.

He received his first senior call-up to the Republic of Ireland national team in November 2018 but is yet to win his first cap.

Who is Harvey Elliott? Liverpool player and future ‘superstar’ set to feature against Arsenal in Carabao Cup

The 16-year-old impressed in the previous round of the competition in their 2-0 win at MK Dons and he was denied a goal twice by the woodwork.

Jurgen Klopp looks likely to make changes all over the pitch against the Gunners and Elliott will feature at some point.

In May, Elliott became the Premier League’s youngest ever player when he entered the pitch for Fulham at Molineux, aged 16 years and 30 days old.

Since then he has joined Liverpool and the boyhood Reds fan revealed his hopes for progression at Anfield.

“I’ll work as hard as I possibly can for the club and I feel Anfield is the perfect place for me to develop and progress as a player,” he said.

Assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders indicated that a ‘fresh and hungry’ line-up would be fielded against Arsenal.

He said: “I think our squad is not big but it doesn’t make sense and it would really not be intelligent to make it even smaller by not using its strength, and one of its strengths in my opinion is the power of the youth with experience. That mixture can bring amazing processes.”

But just who is Rhian Brewster? Below you can see 10 facts you may not know about the 19-year-old.

Real Madrid-linked Lewandowski reveals how Kovac helped keep him at Bayern

The striker says his new head coach’s promised style played a big role in keeping him with the Bundesliga champions

Robert Lewandowski has credited new Bayern Munich head coach Niko Kovac with playing a large role in keeping him at the Bundesliga champions.

Lewandowski spent much of the summer looking for an exit from Bayern, with the striker’s agent declaring it was time for him to take up a new challenge.

Interest from the Premier League and Real Madrid followed, but the club were insistent they would not part with the reigning Bundesliga Golden Boot winner.

In an interview published Wednesday, Lewandowski told SportBild his frustrations with the club at the end of last season, saying he felt alone with no protection from critics.

However, he also declared his desire to remain thanks to the fans, and now has offered further credit to Bayern’s new head coach, Kovac, who left Eintracht Frankfurt to take over from Jupp Heynckes following the 2017-18 season.

“I had a really good discussion with Niko Kovac,” Lewandowski told SportBild, in quotes published in the print edition. “He understood how I felt. The coach explained to me how he wanted to play. I liked that, and because of that decided I wanted to stay. My mind set changed that day.

“I know I’ve made mistakes, but I’m only human.”

Lewandowski also says Bayern’s insistence the club would not let him leave, along with sporting director’s Hasan Salihamidzic’s praise in calling him the world’s best striker, played a big role in allowing him to recommit to the Bundesliga champions.

“I realised how important I am for Bayern and they weren’t going to let me leave,” he explained. “That shows the level and stability of the club.

“That was the point I realised I wanted to give my all for the club once more. I’m looking forward to my future at the club and in Munich. My heart is fully at Bayern again.”

While Lewandowski was frustrated by the criticism he received last season, he made no bones about wanting to improve on a frustrating finish to the season, which saw Bayern falter in the Champions League and the finals of the DFB-Pokal, along with the striker going goalless as Poland were eliminated from the World Cup in the group stage.

“The end of last season wasn’t good,” Lewandowski said. “Not scoring in the semi-final against Real, losing the cup final, not scoring at the World Cup. That’s been motivation for me.

“I love playing football. I also know I need to work to be more successful. I want to push my boundaries and win more titles.”
